Bryken Precision Engineering has partnered with Liverpool John Moores University through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to modernise its operational infrastructure and improve production efficiency.
The project has focused on the overhaul of legacy systems, optimising integrated digital platforms for enterprise resource planning (ERP) and manufacturing execution (MES). These upgrades introduced controlled, traceable workflows and streamlined data handling across departments. A key innovation was the deployment of smart factory dashboards, providing real-time insight into general and CNC-specific performance metrics. This has enabled staff to monitor key indicators such as machine utilisation, scrap rates, and throughput, leading to faster decision-making and improved operational control.
As a result, Bryken has achieved measurable reductions in scrap, enhanced production efficiency, and has lowered its cost of sales. The digital infrastructure now supports scalable growth and continuous improvement, positioning the company for future innovation.
The success of this KTP reflects the outstanding leadership of Principal Investigator Dr Andrew Naylor, whose strategic guidance ensured alignment with industry needs. Lead Supervisor Dr Mohamed Kara-Mohamed provided expert academic oversight, maintaining methodological rigour and supporting the associate’s development. Associate Shivam Sharma has demonstrated exceptional initiative and technical capability, delivering a complex transformation with professionalism and impact. Company-Lead Phil Taylor played a pivotal role in championing the project internally, ensuring organisational buy-in and facilitating the integration of new systems across departments.
